MPS String Camp Showcases Gala, Master Class
7/19/2012

String Institute 2012The Music Preparatory School is hosting the University of St. Thomas String Institute Gala Concert at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 20 in Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon.

The concert will showcase the winning soloists of the MPS concerto competition. The event will also feature string players of all ages in the orchestra with music by Antonio Vivaldi, Tomaso Albinoni and George Frideric Handel.

UST String Institute allowed 24 pre-college participants to study manuscripts, Venetian culture and history, and Vivaldi's influence on J.S. Bach. The week-long camp ends with the performance on Friday.

Paul Krystofiak, director and founder of MPS, is ready for the students to display how the camp group activities encourage creativity and sharing new ideas.

"I know last year’s string concert was very special and I feel after listening to the rehearsals this week that this concert should be even more memorable," Krystofiak said. "These young students are already serious musicians and not just hobbyists. Now as we move into the home stretch, the great rewards and accomplishment of inspiring and nurturing our future generation of musicians in society is starting to sink in.”

MPS will also host an additional master class on Thursday afternoon featuring Conductor and MPS String Coordinator Zachary Carrettin. The concert is the culmination of a week-long intense study of the Baroque string literature by top string players from Houston and students from states other than Texas.

Carrettin teaches violin, viola, and chamber music at MPS and plays violin, baroque violin, electric violin and viola. He has toured and recorded with New World baroque music group, El Mundo, and toured the California mission churches with the world renowned choir, Chanticleer. The project was documented and presented on a DVD produced by Warner Bros.

“It is such a pleasure to have Zachary Carrettin on our UST Music Preparatory School faculty," Krystofiak said. "He is a world-class artist bringing knowledge and experience to our talented string students.”

MPS seeks to enlighten, excite and educate all children and adults who have a desire to make music a part of their lives. It is the goal of the MPS to provide each student with a stimulating environment best suited to his or her musical needs and background. More than 100 young musicians participated in the six music camps hosted by MPS this summer.

The concert on Friday is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Paul Krystofiak at krystop@stthom.edu or 713-525-3566, or Zachary Carrettin at zcarrettin@gmail.com or 832-893-3802.
