‘Don’t Sit in Silence’ to Help Prevent Suicide

Photo courtesy of Mental Health Awareness Day - University of MinnesotaIn recognition of the number of suicides that occur in the United States each day, 105 empty chairs will be placed on the Campus Life Mall for the “Don’t Sit in Silence: Reach Out!” campaign from Sept. 9-14. The campaign is sponsored by the University of St. Thomas Office of Counseling and Disabilities Services for National Suicide Prevention Week.

Members of the UST community can view messages of hope on the chairs to encourage those contemplating suicide to seek help. Crisis and suicide hotline numbers, warning signs of suicide and resources for seeking help will also be displayed. There will also be two chairs available on which people can write messages of hope, love and support for someone who may be feeling suicidal.

“We want all members of the UST community to be aware of this important issue and to know that there is hope,” said Jennifer Shannon, Coordinator for Counseling & Disability Services. “We want people to know where they can go to get help and how to help someone who is in distress.”

The purpose of the campaign is to encourage those silently suffering from depression to remember that they are not alone and to feel empowered to seek help. In addition to the display in the Mall, C&DS will also provide an interactive display table in Guinan Residence Hall throughout the week with materials on suicide prevention.
