Walk 'Way of the Cross'
3/22/2013

Way of the CrossUST community members are invited to walk the Way of the Cross in the heart of the city beginning at 10:15 a.m. on Good Friday, March 29.

The procession will begin at the Chapel of St. Basil and continue through the city, ending at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Downtown with a blessing by the Most Rev. Joseph A. Fiorenza, archbishop emeritus.

Five stops will honor the passion of the cross, including the UST White Memorial Plaza, Holy Rosary Catholic Church and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. This is a meditative procession with readings, choral pieces and reflections on the Gospel at each station.

Communion and Liberation has organized the Way of the Cross in Houston for 13 years.

“Each Good Friday is wonderful because we, as a community, are focused on the cross of Christ,” one of the members said. “The sense is that there is no other place we would rather be.”

Sponsored by Communion and Liberation and UST Campus Ministry, they invite all who want to follow the cross of Christ to walk together through the city to be reminded of the gift we have been given.

For Roman Catholics throughout the world, the Stations of the Cross are synonymous with Lent, Holy Week and, especially, Good Friday. This devotion is also known as the "Way of the Cross," the "Via Crucis," and the "Via Dolorosa." It commemorates 14 key events on the day of Christ's crucifixion. The walk commemorates his final walk through the streets of Jerusalem, carrying the Cross.

This is a nationwide event. Even Timothy Cardinal Dolan leads New Yorkers across the Brooklyn Bridge to commentate the stations. Read more about the Stations of the Cross.

The event is free and open to the public. For details call 713-203-1566.
