Ivany Names Aquila Provost
1/21/2014

Dr. Dominic AquilaUniversity of St. Thomas President, Dr. Robert Ivany, announced the promotion of Dr. Dominic Aquila, former Vice President of Academic Affairs, to Provost on Jan. 14.

The promotion came as a means to provide flexibility and better preparation in response to the rapid pace of change that impacts higher education.

“In this key role, Dr. Aquila will assist me in coordinating the efforts of the vice presidents to support the Academic Plan,” Ivany said. “Our success requires innovative planning and vigorous execution in enrollment management, facility enhancement, new revenue stream development, student life enrichment and fundraising efforts.”

Aquila first joined St. Thomas in 2007 as the Dean of Arts and Sciences. In 2008, he was named Vice President of Academic Affairs. Now, as provost, he is focusing his energy on the University’s strategic initiative, to develop academic programs that interest and will benefit students, and strengthen the programs already in place.

“The mission,” Ivany said, “to educate leaders of faith and character remains constant, but the ways we achieve our mission must always improve.”

In addition, Aquila would like to build upon the University’s strong Catholic identity by learning how to better serve the Greater Houston area. Plans include expanding offsite course offerings and online offerings to increase the University’s presence throughout the city.

“It is an incomparable honor and privilege to be named to this extremely important position, especially now, when higher education is in great flux, and many universities find themselves at a crossroads.”  Aquila said. “At St. Thomas we have a mission to advance and an intellectual and cultural heritage which is our calling to transmit to our students. New realities challenge the traditional ways in which this transmission occurs."

"In my new role, my purpose is to bring together and focus the powerfully creative forces of our faculty, deans, staff, students, vice presidents and community partners to communicate the attractiveness and vitality of St. Thomas’s educational mission and heritage," Aquila said. "The measure of our success is how well everyone in our community, and especially our students, realize the benefits of this rich tradition in their lives. My great hope is that all who enjoy the friendship of our community prosper according to the values of our Basilian founders, who with the psalmist pray for discipline, goodness and knowledge."
