Aquila Selected for National Leadership Development
4/15/2014

Dr. Dominic AquilaUniversity of St. Thomas is pleased to announce that Dr. Dominic Aquila, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, is one of 23 senior-level administrators in higher education nationwide selected by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) to participate in a year-long Executive Leadership Academy.

Individuals chosen for the program are vice presidents or cabinet officers in higher education who aspire to the presidency of an independent college or university. Aquila will participate in two seminars held in Washington, DC, as well as readings, webinars, and a mentoring program. In addition, he will develop an experiential learning plan focused on specific areas of presidential responsibility.

The purpose of the Academy is to prepare provosts and vice presidents to serve as effective college presidents. “Competition for the available places in the program was intense,” said CIC President Richard Ekman. “The review committee found the nomination materials to be most impressive. They (and I) believe that Aquila has the potential for highly effective leadership as a college or university president.”

Aquila has 32 years of experience in public and private higher education. Aquila is also a Trustee of the American Academy of Liberal Education, the Crossroads Cultural Center, a member of the Council of Independent Colleges Chief Academic Officer and Chief Financial Office Task Force, and the Children at Risk Institute.

His areas of research and expertise include music and culture, Catholicism and American culture, and higher education administration. He can also speak on American and European History.

  • B.M., The Juilliard School, Percussion and Composition
  • M.B.A., New York University, Marketing and Management
  • D. Litt et Phil., The University of South Africa, History

“We are very pleased to see Dr. Aquila’s selection for this prestigious development program,” said Dr. Robert Ivany, University of St. Thomas President. “His attendance reflects his dedication to higher education and national recognition as a leader in the field of higher education.”

Since the program began in the 2009–2010 academic year, several vice presidents have become presidents. “These indicators suggest that CIC is helping to meet the leadership needs of higher education by offering highly effective leadership development programs for modest fees to member institutions,” Ekman said.

The Academy is co-sponsored by CIC, the American Academic Leadership Institute, and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities with financial support from Academic Search, Inc. and the Henry Luce Foundation. Tom Kepple, president of AALI and president emeritus of Juniata College (PA), is the program director.
