Welder Hall Gets Lab Makeover Just in Time for Fall

When Cameron School of Business students return to Welder Hall in the fall, they’ll find a 42-seat large surprise on the second floor; a brand new computer lab, available to all students for studying and classwork.

The lab will be outfitted with 42 Dell Optiplex 9020 computers, becoming the first computing space dedicated to the Cameron School of Business. Upon completion, the lab will be the largest computing space on campus, with the basement lab in the Doherty Library coming in at a close second.

Dr. Beena George, Cameron School of Business dean is excited to have this new project completed and ready to greet incoming students and those continuing their business studies at Cameron.

“The new classroom will support the use of pedagogical techniques that foster student learning through creative uses of technology,” Dr. George said. “We will also be able to provide hands-on training on different technology tools to our students, so that they can become effective users of the tools they will encounter in the workplace.”

The lab will also be used as a classroom for Finance and Accounting courses.

Dr. John Leavins, Cameron School of Business professor and chair of Accounting detailed the needs of employers and how the computer lab will help students meet that skillset.

"The use of technology by accountants is moving at an ever-accelerating rate,” Dr. Leavins said.  “As a result, employers of accounting students want applicants who are comfortable working with various technologies. The new computer lab will expand the accounting department's capability to offer the needed technology training to our students."

The lab will be available when courses are not reserved to occupy it. A student worker will be available to monitor the lab outside of scheduled course reservations.  The times of availability for the new lab will be available at the Cameron School of Business.
