Golf Tournament Raises $160,000 for Scholarships
Friends and alumni of the University of St. Thomas participated in the annual Scholarship Tee- Up Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 11. The event was held at the Blackhorse Golf Club and grossed more than $160,000 for the Fr. Francis E. Monaghan Scholarship Fund.

George DeMontrond, owner of DeMontrond Automotive Group and former UST Board President, was the tournament chair. Joe Cleary, longtime UST friend and 2010 tournament chair, served as the honorary chair. Platinum Sponsors were the William and Evelyn Griffin Foundation, Marathon Oil, and Harvey Builders. A special gift was received from Bank of America and the golf shirts were sponsored by CenterPoint Energy. Dinner was hosted by John Marion Carrabba, owner of Piatto Ristorante and a 1980 UST alumnus.

Players from the new UST golf team were “rented” as fifth player “ringers” by five participating teams. Wells Fargo Bank, led by Victor Tekell, won first place with an outstanding score of 52. The “Dead Last” award went to Compass Consulting & Benefits, led by Jim Phillips.

UST established the Monaghan Scholarship Fund to help deserving students get a quality, liberal arts faith-based education. Since 2000, the fund has awarded more than $9 million in scholarships and grants.
