Cheer on UST Alumni in Marathon
1/9/2013

The UST Marathon Cheer Party, a fundraiser for the UST Alumni Association, begins at 7 a.m. in front of Link-Lee Mansion, 3800 Montrose Blvd.

The Chevron Houston Marathon Race Weekend will bring roughly a quarter-million people to the Houston area making Race Day the largest single-day sporting event in Houston.

Kelli Kickerillo ’03, chief marketing officer and executive vice president of Kickerillo Companies, originally organized the Cheer Party tradition in 2007, but gives credit to a fellow alumna Marty Thompson for the idea.

“I took on the task of organizing the event and turned it into a mini-fundraiser for the Alumni Board,” Kickerillo said.“The party has grown so much, and it's still one of the most exciting events I attend for UST.”

At the Cheer Party, coffee and a light all-you-can-eat breakfast are available with a $5 donation. Proceeds will benefit the Alumni Association.

Kickerillo, a member of the UST Board of Directors and a former president of the Alumni Association, took the idea and ran with it to create an event that has garnered more UST supporters over the years.Kickerillo, whosupports scholarships and the UST Annual Fund, looks forward to the Cheer Party every year.

“With the runners, our amazing donors, alumni and students who attend, and the unbelievable crowds, it will be the perfect morning to see the spirit of UST and Houston combined,"Kickerillosaid.

Also on Jan. 13 is the 11th running of the Aramco Houston Half Marathon, featuring the highest capacity ever of 25,000 participants.

David Stone ’03 ran the half-marathon in Houston in 2011 and plans to run the full marathon this year. He said Houston has great fan support and after doing most of his training alone, he’s glad to be with so many people on race day.

Photo: Runners“I love running by all the familiar sites, and going by UST will remind me of the great times I had there and the friendships I have formed,” Stone said. “Whether you are running 13.1 or 26.2 miles, it is long. Seeing people cheering at UST really gives you energy along the way.”

Alumni Board President, Danny Elustondo ‘99, said the cheer party is a great opportunity to watch one of Houston’s marquee events right alongside the race route.

“Partygoers have a chance to cheer on their fellow UST alums and marathoners as they run toward a great accomplishment,” Elustondo said.“It also shows the visibility of UST, and how, as alumni, we seek to remain connected to the city and support all it has to offer.”
