UST Golf Team Welcomes First Three Student-Athletes
5/5/2011
The inaugural St. Thomas Men’s Golf Team welcomed its first three recruits on May 4 when A.J. Skiba, of Sugar Land, Jeffrey Swearingen, of The Woodlands, and Ryan Lyons, of Spring all signed letters of intent to compete for the Celt Golf Team in the 2011-2012 season.

A.J. Skiba, a four-year letterman at Austin High School in Sugarland, has racked up several top 10 finishes on both the Texas Junior Golf Tour as well as the Houston Golf Association Junior Performance Series and has a victory at The Houstonian Country Club Junior Championship. He carried a 76.5 scoring average through his senior year of high school and was also an outstanding student and community leader. He will graduate this spring with a 4.54 GPA and has recieved the DECA “Man of Integrity” award.

“AJ is a very athletic golfer and can hit the ball a long way,” said Golf Coach Matt Luther. “His athleticism and work ethic give him a lot of room to grow as a golfer over the next four years. I expect him to build on an already solid junior golf resume and become a strong contributor and leader for the UST golf team.”

Jeff Swearingen, a senior at College Park High School in The Woodlands, has competed extensively in the Texas Junior Golf Tour and Texas Legends Golf Tour. He was a three-year varsity letterman at College Park and recorded 14 top five finishes over his high school career. In 2010, he won his high school district championship in a playoff after rounds of 71-76. He backed up that strong performance with a 2nd place finish in the Region 2-5A tournament, shooting 70-76 for 2 rounds at Twin Rivers GC in Waco. Jeff is an excellent student and was awarded the College Park High School “Cavalier Award for Excellence” for outstanding achievement both on and off the golf course.

“Jeff is a very consistent player and any successful college golf team needs a few players just like him,” Luther said. “He is very even-tempered, steady and will be a solid contributor to the Celt golf team for the next four years.”

Ryan Lyons, a transfer student from Stephen F. Austin State University, played high school golf at Klein Collins high school. He was a member of both the varsity golf team and the choir. He has won several tournaments at both the high school level and in the Houston Golf Association and Southern Texas PGA Junior Series. Ryan earned a 3.3 GPA through his first year of college and plans to continue studying psychology at UST.

“Ryan has the type of golf swing that other players notice on the range,” Luther said. “He hits the ball very solidly and flights it very well. He has the potential to shoot some very low scores for the Celt golf team.”
