UST College Republicans Host “9/11: Never Forget”

Though a decade has passed, many Americans will never forget the tragic events that scarred our nation on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

The University of St. Thomas College Republicans will commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with the event, “9/11: Never Forget” at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, on the University of St. Thomas Academic Mall, in front of the Chapel of St. Basil, 3802 Yoakum.

The event is intended to encourage students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community to reflect upon where we stand as a nation today, to recall the emotions felt on that terrible morning and to remember the 2,977 lives lost that September morning.

The event will feature a memorial to the victims of Sept. 11 consisting of 2,977 flags, one for each victim, emplaced  in the grass of the Academic Mall similar to the organization of head-stones at Arlington National Cemetery .

A keynote speech will be given by Army Sgt. Kenneth J. Depew, a UST junior political science major and a veteran of the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was a member of the United States Armyʼs “Old Guard” in Washington D.C. during the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, after which he and his unit spent four weeks conducting rescue/recovery operations at the Pentagon. Depew was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and numerous military awards and decorations. Read more about Depew.

The ceremony will begin with the singing of the National Anthem and will close with “God Bless America” by sung by UST student David Salazar.

In conjunction with the flag memorial, attendees and members of the UST community are invited to adopt one of the flags on display for $1 per flag. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the United 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Penn.
