Celts Sign High School Golf Champs
5/30/2012

Celts Sign High School Golf ChampsThe University of St. Thomas Celt golf team announces the signing of two of the top high school golfers in the Houston area. Juan Gutierrez and Richard Le of St. Thomas High School both signed letters of intent to compete for the Celts this fall. Fresh off a TAAPS 5A state championship, they won six out of nine tournaments this season.

Gutierrez held a scoring average of about 75 on his way to earning all-state honors in his senior year. A native of Venezuela, Gutierrez was the 2009 Venezuelan junior national champion, and he was a medalist at the Far West Texas Golf Classic in 2011 with rounds of 72-73 at Painted Dunes Desert Golf Club in El Paso, Texas.

“Juan is more than 6 feet 4 inches tall and hits the golf ball very hard," said Head Coach of Men's and Women's Golf Matt Luther. "For his size he is incredibly gifted around the greens and has an excellent feel for the game. His experience competing at the national level in Venezuela is going to be a huge asset to the Celt team.”

Le's high school career included four wins on the Texas Junior Golf Tour. He maintained a scoring average of 75, which includes nine rounds in the 60s spanning his high school career.  Le has been a highly-regarded junior at the national level and was featured as one of Golf Digest’s "Best Little Swing in America" contest at nine years old.  He is also a standout in the classroom. He will graduate from St. Thomas High School with a 3.7 GPA.

“Richard is an incredibly talented young player who has an almost unlimited ceiling for growth," Luther said. "He is a great kid and an extremely hard worker and the sky is the limit for Richard at UST."

Luther said both Juan and Richard will make an immediate impact on all aspects of the UST golf program.

"They come from a very successful St. Thomas High School program and are used to winning golf tournaments. They are both fine young men and have excellent work ethics."
