The final home game for the University of St. Thomas men’s soccer
team celebrated Senior Night and a win on Oct. 6 at Houston Amateur Sports Park. The Celts beat Southwestern Assemblies of God 1-0.
UST came out and played with something to prove to the team and to its seniors, and Gonzalo Nemi, from Mesa Community College, and Luis Bustos, from Lanham Creek High School.
The Celts dominated most of the first-half possession but could only come up with four shots. UST’s defense was well organized and strong with sophomore goalkeeper Jason Taffet making necessary saves. The game was tied going into halftime 0-0.
The second half was another struggle from both sides to create clear scoring chances. In the 60th
minute, SAGU was awarded a penalty kick from a questionable hand ball call, but Taffet was up to the challenge. Taffet blocked the PK and smothered the ball to clear any danger of a rebound.
The save sparked the Celts, and the team picked up the energy. In the 79th
minute, freshman, Victor Falcon headed in a corner kick from Chris Natera to give UST the lead. It was Natera’s eighth assist on the year, which leads the conference. The Celts held strong and finished the match with the 1-0 victory.
Seniors Bustos and Nemi were presented with a framed jersey at half time and took home a victory in their final match in front of their fans.
“They have been great ambassadors for UST and the soccer program,” said Head Coach Aaron Champenoy
. “They are greatly respected by their teammates and coaches.”
