Menís Golf Competes With Elite Teams
The University of St. Thomas men’s golf team
competed Oct. 22-23 at Houston Baptist University’s Invitational Championship hosted at Quail Valley Country Club in Missouri City, Texas. The strongest field the Celts will see all year included HBU, Sam Houston State University, McNeese State University, Florida Atlantic University, Rice University and University of Houston.
The Celts struggled in the first round with a score of 314, but came back firing Monday afternoon with a 293, their best score to date. Tuesday’s final round brought tough conditions and score of 304, which was good enough to put the Celts in a tie for sixth place with The University of Nebraska at Omaha.
“We held our own against a strong Division I field this week,” said Head Coach Matt Luther
. “The guys struggled early but continued to fight for 54 holes. We are learning and improving every time we tee it up.”
Luther is ready to improve on a good foundation and looks to National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics competition coming up.
“We got to see some of the top collegiate golfers in the country this week and we held our own,” Luther said. “This is something we can build on into next week when we face a very strong NAIA field.”
The Celts final tournament will be Oct. 29-30 at the Northwood Fall Shootout in Cedar Hill, Texas.
