UST Names Winners of UST/Archdiocesan Essay Contest
Though the University of St. Thomas/Archdiocesan Essay Contest was canceled due to inclement weather on Friday, Feb. 4, the University will still recognize the winners of the essay contest as well as the many dedicated volunteer essay readers. The awards ceremony will not be rescheduled.

A total of 3,080 essays were submitted in December by third-to 12th-grade students from 34 Archdiocese Catholic schools. Students chose from essay topics including peer pressure; leadership; how your Catholic faith makes you a distinctive American; how young people can spread the Gospel; what God calls you to do in your daily life; and how young people can live a life of integrity.

Each first, second and third place winner will receive a book signed by His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, a certificate of participation from Sister Kevina Keating, the Superintendent of Schools and a University of St. Thomas pin along with a letter of congratulations from UST President Dr. Robert Ivany. Each participating Archdiocese school will hold a recognition ceremony for essay winners. A $1,500 scholarship to the University of St. Thomas will be offered to first place winners in 11th and 12th grade who enroll at UST upon high school graduation.

“This contest is an opportunity for students to personally reflect on the meaning of their Catholic education,” said Elsie Biron, director of Catholic Outreach. “At the University of St. Thomas, we emphasize the life-long importance of becoming insightful and critical thinkers with superior writing skills. The number of participants in this essay contest shows that critical message is shared throughout the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese and embraced each year by more and more students.”
