Internationally Acclaimed Violinist Presents Summer String Camp
Zachary Carrettin, internationally acclaimed violinist and Vivaldi expert, has left his mark in the classical world and will now share his talent with the University of St. Thomas Music Preparatory School.

Carrettin will direct the String Institute: Vivaldi and Venice, to be held from 9 a.m. – noon, July 18-22 in Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon. Carrettin is currently a violin instructor at the UST Music Preparatory School.

Students of all ages are invited to apply for the string institute and must have already played a Vivaldi concerto in their studies. They will rehearse and perform Vivaldi’s concertos for string orchestra, view and discuss manuscripts and first editions, learn about Venetian culture and history, be exposed to the work of Vivaldi’s contemporaries and learn about his music’s influence on Johann Sebastian Bach.

“Vivaldi is particularly important to young string players because his music is the best example of mid- to late-baroque music in Italy,” said Carrettin. “Johann Sebastian Bach himself thought that Vivaldi was the greatest living example of the Italian style, so much so that he chose to transcribe at least 40 of Vivaldi’s concertos for other instruments.”

A former student of the Music Preparatory School Director Paul Krystofiak and a native Houstonian, Carrettin earned bachelor and master of music degrees from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. He has also received a Performance Diploma in conducting from the National University of Music in Bucharest, Romania and a master’s in orchestral conducting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in musical arts in viola from the Shepherd School of Music.

Carrettin has toured extensively in the United States, Europe and South America including with the New World baroque music group, El Mundo, and a tour of the California mission churches with the choir Chanticleer. His own compositions have been heard at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in D.C., the Shubert Theater in Boston, the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House and in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Two other music programs are being offered this summer by the Music Preparatory School. A piano day camp will take place from June 20-24, and a guitar day camp will take place from July 11-15. Founded by Krystofiak, the Music Preparatory School seeks to enlighten, excite and educate all children and adults who have a desire to make music a part of their lives. Building on the University of St. Thomas’ commitment to excellence in music education and community outreach, the school offers private music instruction, music theory and history classes to pre-college and non-traditional students at all levels.
