Wood Family Dances, Performs Celtic Spring Concert
8/23/2011
The University of St. Thomas William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies will host Celtic Spring, a concert of traditional Irish music and dance at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 2, on the UST campus, Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon. The event is sponspred by Clare Glassell and Emily Embrey.

It’s all in the family with Celtic Spring! The Wood family from California is a charming traditional Celtic music group of six siblings who play the fiddle and step dance as they are backed by their mother on the keyboard and their father on percussion.

Immensely gifted, each of the Wood children began learning the fiddle and Irish step dancing at the age of four years old; they hardly remember a time when they did not play the fiddle and dance! The siblings are also classically trained violinists. This training has brought a certain beauty and clarity to bear on their music. To learn the traditional fiddle styles of Ireland, Scotland and Cape Breton, they have studied under some of the finest contemporary fiddlers, including Natalie MacMaster, Alasdair Fraser, Martin Hayes and Liz Carroll.

While engrossed in traditional music, the band also has written numerous original compositions, each adding to the diversity of their music. There is no doubt that Celtic Spring definitely will put a “spring” in your step.

The members of Celtic Spring are: Elizabeth, age 24, fiddle, step dance, octave fiddle; Deirdre, age 22, fiddle, step dance, vocal; Sean, age 20, octave mandolin, fiddle, step dance, octave fiddle; Patrick, age 18, octave fiddle, fiddle, step dance; Maire, age14, fiddle, step dance; Aidan, age 9, step dance, fiddle; Mary (mother) keyboards; Greg (father), bodhran, percussion.

Cost is $15 for adults; students and children are free. For tickets and more information contact Lori Gallagher at 713-525-3592 (direct) or irishstudies@stthom.edu.
