South Central Modern Languages Association Elects Dr. Coscio as VP

Dr. Elizabeth Coscio, chair of the University of St. Thomas Department of Modern and Classical Languages, has been recently elected as the new vice president for 2012 and president-elect for 2013 of the South Central Modern Language Association (SCMLA). Her election will be formally announced at the SCMLA meeting in Arkansas on Oct. 28.

The mission of the SCMLA is to enhance involvement in scholarship, teaching and research in the modern languages and literature through an annual conference, awards supporting travel, research and conference papers, two annual newsletters and a journal published three times per year. Coscio served as the keynote speaker and local arrangements coordinator for the SCMLA 2005 conference and has been actively involved with the organization for many years.

Coscio received a master’s degree in Spanish Literature from Rice University and a doctorate in Spanish from the University of Houston. She has been teaching at UST since 1997 where she teaches applied language, literature, culture and basic skills courses.
