UST Among ‘America’s Best Colleges’
9/17/2012
Graphic: U.S. News & World Report 2012For the 19th consecutive year, the University of St. Thomas has been named to the top tier of the U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” list of universities offering master’s degrees in the Western region of the United States.

UST currently ranks 34th in 2013.
A prospective student’s decision to select a university depends on many subjective factors, but university rankings provide a starting point to compare various aspects of different schools at a glance. Combined with campus visits and interviews, the rankings provide a resource for parents and students contemplating one of life’s most challenging financial decisions.

“We are always pleased to be recognized by our peers for our unique Catholic, Basilian education,” said University President Dr. Robert Ivany. “Our strength remains in our committed students, dedicated faculty and supportive staff. Through the ‘Faith in our Future’ campaign, we will build the facilities they deserve to maintain excellence in our academic programs.”

U.S. News & World Report surveyed more than 1,600 colleges and universities for its annual publication, and based its rankings on 16 widely accepted indicators of excellence.
St. Thomas’ low student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1, small class sizes and the high percentage of freshmen who were ranked in the top quarter of their high school graduating class were key factors in St. Thomas’ ranking. More than 3,700 students come to St. Thomas from 40 states and 58 countries.

St. Thomas is categorized among schools that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs, but few doctoral programs. St. Thomas offers 10 master’s programs and one doctoral program in philosophy. The universities in this category are ranked within four geographic areas – North, South, Midwest and West – because these schools tend to draw students heavily from the surrounding states.
