Graphic: UST BasketballThe University of St. Thomas women’s basketball team is gearing up for the 2012-2013 season. The Celts will open with a scrimmage against San Jacinto College at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 in Jerabeck Gym.

“Scrimmaging against an athletic team like San Jacinto is a great way to help us see where we are at,” said Head Coach Mike Ricks. “They always have a competitive team.”

The Celts begin its road test by traveling to Espanola, New Mexico for the Santa Claran Classic for a weekend of competition. Other road games and highlights of the Celts non-conference schedule include Wayland Baptist University and St. Gregory’s University at the Halo Classic on Nov. 16 and 17 in San Antonio, Texas. Also, the team will take a trip to New Orleans to play Loyola University on Nov. 24.

The Celts will battle the Huskies in an exhibition game at Houston Baptist University, a NCAA Division I opponent, on Nov. 21.

“We always look forward to the chance to compete against Division I teams,” said Ricks. “I am a big believer in testing your team against the best in order to prepare for conference play.”

The Celts will host Northwood University on Jan. 3 to kick off 2013. Also, the team will play on Jan. 15 with Dallas Christian College, who the Celts beat twice last year. Conference play will begin on Nov. 12 against Jarvis Christian College.

Join the Celts for its first regular season home game against Dallas Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 6 in Jerabeck Gym. The game is free for UST students, faculty and staff and $3 admission for all others.
