Singers Succeed in Vocal Competition
Photo: UST NATSEight University of St. Thomas vocal studies majors competed in the Greater Houston National Association of Teachers of Singing spring vocal competition, held April 13 at the University of Houston’s Moore School of Music.

Of the eight UST singers who competed, six advanced to finals and two advanced to semi-finals. Alexandra Summerour, soprano, placed first in the collegiate sophomore women’s division; Christian Mondragon, tenor, placed first in the collegiate senior men’s division; and Kaci Timmons, soprano, took first place in the collegiate graduate division.

Bethany Goldson, mezzo-soprano, placed third in the collegiate freshman women’s division; Meeka Opong, mezzo-soprano, placed third in the collegiate senior women’s division; and Marissa Sears, soprano, placed second in the collegiate graduate division. Phillip Todd King, tenor, and Errin Hatter, soprano, were both named semi-finalists in the graduate division.

The students all study voice in the UST voice studio with Dr. Brady Knapp, professor of choral and vocal studies.

"I am exceedingly proud of my singers," Knapp said. "They all deserve this recognition for their hard work, dedication and commitment to the craft of singing."

NATS is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world with more than 7,000 members in the United States and Canada and representatives from over 25 other countries. The competition was open to NATS members who teach in local universities in the Houston area.

“I feel fortunate to be teaching at UST and I am blessed with talented, intelligent and serious students,” Knapp said. “It has been good for us all to receive positive feedback from other professional colleagues within the local NATS organization.”
