Business Students Awarded at Case
5/23/2013

Undergraduate senior business majors at University of St. Thomas get the opportunity to

present their case study analyses to their peers and a group of professional judges in the Cameron School of Business Case Competition. Each semester, years of business lectures and months of preliminary case presentations culminate with this event.

This semester, Dr. Beena George, dean of the Cameron School, guided her senior seminar students to take on the task of analyzing GREE, a Japanese mobile social gaming company, and presenting feasible strategies to replicate its success in the international markets. Thirty-four students were grouped into eight teams to present their research and analyses to a panel of eleven distinguished judges with a variety of academic and professional backgrounds.

Brandon Korenek, Veselin Kossev, Shenel Rimando and Christopher White won first place.  Mei Wan Tong, the president of the Cameron School of Business Advisory Board and director at Wells Fargo, generously sponsored the competition and attended to present the $500 prize to the winning team and recognize all students.

Kossev was proud of his team’s win after their hard work.

“The case competition seemed like a daunting task at first, but with Dr. George’s guidance throughout the semester, we were able to put together all the disciplines we learned at CSB to make a great presentation,” Kossev said. “It was a great experience working closely with a team, and I think it was probably one of the most valuable projects I’ve worked on while at CSB.”

Second place was awarded to Ethan Bing, Adrianne Edling, Priscilla Jimenez, Wade Nairn and Brette Seffens. The team of Richard LeBlanc, Sarah Pina, David Sickles and Caleb Williams was also awarded with $500 for taking first place in the Marketplace Simulation that took place a few weeks before the competition.

Students had the opportunity to meet with the judges during the awards luncheon and get a glimpse of what awaits them in the business world.

The professional judges included:

  • Deniz Demirors, CSB Advisory Board Member and President, Smooth Transition Consulting
  • Esteban Flores, Senior Financial Services Representative, First Investors
  • John Haynes, CSB Advisory Board Member, Chief Commercial Officer, Boardwalk Pipelines LP
  • Mimi McGehee, UST Women’s Energy Network Advisor, Land Administration Coordinator, Gulf Coast Energy Resources, LLC
  • Mohan Natarajan, Senior Practice Director, Oracle
  • Steve Pao, President, CSP Management Consulting
  • M.G. Shetty, CSB Advisory Board Member and Senior Vice President of Trade Finance and Services, Cadence Bank
  • David Stoner, CSB Advisory Board Member and General Manager of the Global Quality Projects & Technology Division, Shell Oil Company
  • Karen Yale, CSB Alumni Board Member and Director of Administrative Services, EP Energy

Well-experienced winners from the fall 2012 Case Competition, Samantha Knowles and Michelle Jabbour, also joined the panel of judges.
