DiNardo Named USCCB VP

Cardinal Daniel DiNardoDaniel Cardinal DiNardo, the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, was elected vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, on Tuesday. Cardinal DiNardo is a member of the University of St. Thomas Board of Directors.

“I humbly accept the privilege of being the new vice president for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops,” Cardinal DiNardo said in a statement. “I congratulate the newly elected president of the conference, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, and look forward to supporting him in his role.”

For the last three years, Kurtz has served as vice president of the bishops' conference. It is customary for the vice president to move onto the top job. Archbishop Kurtz and Cardinal DiNardo are elected to three-year terms, which begin at the conclusion of the General Assembly, Nov. 14.

“As Archbishop Kurtz and I embark on these responsibilities, I ask for the prayers of our fellow bishops, the faithful of the Archdiocese of Louisville, the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, and all Catholics as we work together for Christ and His Church,” Cardinal DiNardo said.

The mission of the Conference is to act collaboratively and consistently on vital issues confronting the Church and society; foster communion with the Church in other nations, within the Church universal, under the leadership of its supreme pastor, the Roman Pontiff; and offer appropriate assistance to each bishop in fulfilling his particular ministry in the local Church.

Last year, Cardinal DiNardo spoke on campus about the threats to religious freedom, one of the important issues of the USCCB.

Cardinal DiNardo shepherds an archdiocese that serves 1.3 million Catholics.
