Greeks in Houston

The director of UST Tutorial Services, Dr. Constantina Michalos, and Alumna Irene Cassis have written a book titled, “Greeks in Houston” printed by Arcadia Publishing.

The photographs and anecdotes collected in the book chronicle the founding of the Greek community in Houston at the turn of the 20th century as well as the establishment of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

This book features the story of individuals who worked diligently to forge new lives for themselves as they maintained their Greek identity and their Orthodox faith. The book also depicts the great efforts of the Greek founders who have built the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral complex.

“Their names remind us of their hard work and commitment to establishing their “Koinonia”or Community in Houston,” Michalos said. “It is a tribute to these pioneers and their descendants and a modest thank you for the efforts and sacrifices they made so that we could live as one family in Christ.”

As a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Michalos edited the Evangelismos, the Cathedral’s monthly publication. In 2007, she edited “This Precious Legacy”, an updated history of the Cathedral celebrating its 90th anniversary.

Irene Cassis graduated summa cum laude from UST with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in religious education in 1980. She was awarded the Archdiocesan Medal of St. Paul for her outstanding services to the church by Archbishop Demetrios in 2006.

“In 1982 and 2007, I co-authored “This Precious Legacy”, which served as a historical foundation for Greeks in Houston,” Cassis said.

The book is available at the UST bookstore, Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral bookstore and Barnes & Noble. It costs $25.00.
