Vatican Media Expert to Speak on Pope Francis
1/22/2014

In honor of Pope Francis’ first year as pontiff,  the University of St. Thomas Center for Faith and Culture will host the Rev. Thomas Rosica, CSB, for a special lecture. The lecture, “New Peripheries for the Church: The Franciscan Quiet Revolution One Year Later,’ will be given at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 23 in Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum Blvd.

CEO of Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation and president of Assumption University in Windsor, Ontario, Father Rosica will speak on the momentous transition in the Papacy one year ago and how Pope Benedict's decision to resign and Pope Francis' boldness and courageous leadership, have changed the Church in remarkable ways.

“[Pope Benedict’s] resignation stands as an important moment in the life of the Catholic Church and in the life of the world,” Rosica said. “He offered us the epitome of a courageous and humble decision that will forever mark the papacy and the life of the Church.”

Never before has a leader of the Church been the most talked about person on the Internet. Yet, this past year, Pope Francis has surpassed all others and continues to gain attention for his humility and simple way of leading the Church into the future.

“On March 13, 2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio received the call to go, rebuild, repair, renew and heal the church,” Rosica said. “What we have witnessed over the past nine months is simply a disciple of Jesus repairing, renewing, restoring, reconciling and healing the Church. There are those who delight in describing the new Pope as a bold, brazen revolutionary sent to rock the boat. Others think he has come to cause a massive shipwreck. But the only revolution that Pope Francis has inaugurated is a revolution of tenderness.”

Rosica served as Media Attaché at two Synods of Bishops at the Vatican in 2008 and 2012 and served as English language Deputy Spokesperson for the Vatican during the Papal transition in February and March. In 2009, Rosica was also appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. His vast experience and knowledge on Pope Francis and insider’s view of the Vatican allows him to provide insight into the future of the Catholic Church with Pope Francis at the head.
