Fernandez Awarded for Volunteer Work
9/17/2007
UST Assistant Professor of Accounting Ramon Fernandez has been selected by the Points of Light Foundation as the Daily Point of Light for Oct. 1, 2007, for his work with the Volunteer Income Tax Association (VITA) program.
The Points of Light Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting volunteerism, awards Daily Points of Light each weekday to individuals or organizations that are making a difference in their communities through service work.
Fernandez has taught at UST for 25 years and has volunteered for VITA for more than 24 years. He has also incorporated the program into the service-learning curriculum at UST. He has specifically worked with non-English speakers and with undocumented workers who are often hesitant to file income tax returns.
Fernandez has helped these communities build a connection with the Internal Revenue Service. To be considered for a Daily Point of Light award, a nominee’s volunteer work must address a community need, build connections with those who may be isolated from the larger community and result in a lasting positive impact.
