UST Chinese Language Students Place in Competition
11/26/2007
Students in the University of St. Thomas Chinese language classes placed in a series of recent Chinese language speech competitions. The classes are part of the UST modern and classical language department. The Chinese language and cultural classes were added to the curriculum in the fall 2006 semester and are taught by Dr. Sarah Chu-Chao Tsai, lecturer of Chinese language and culture.
On Nov. 10, students competed in the Second Annual Mandarin Chinese Speech Contest at Rice University. Nguyen Khoa was selected as finalist in the category of Non-Chinese descent. Khoa is an undergraduate student from Vietnam. He also won last year’s First Annual Mandarin Speech contest held at the UST campus. He won a three month scholarship to study abroad in Taiwan.
UST student April Yang won third place in the category of Advanced Chinese at the Sixth Annual Greater Houston Area Youth Chinese Speech Contest at the Chinese Civic Center in Houston. Yang is Chinese-American. She won first place in April 2007 in the Greater Houston Area Chinese Speech Contest held at the University of Houston.
“All the students and I worked very hard to achieve our accomplishments,” said Tsai. “This has motivated them to master the Chinese language and I am very proud of them. I hope UST opens more advanced level Chinese course so students can continue in their learning.”
