12/4/2007
ICUSTAA new educational opportunity has been inaugurated into the International Council of Universities of St. Thomas Aquinas (ICUSTA). St. Thomas Education College at Anhui University, as well as the Saint Thomas Cultural Center at the Anhui Institute of International Business was the site of an opening ceremony, Oct. 30. The University of St. Thomas Santiago, Chile, is a member of ICUSTA, which now unites some 26 universities, with over 200,000 students on the five continents.

The University of Anhui is located in Hefei, China, the provincial capital of Anhui Province. It is the main University of the Province which has over 70 million inhabitants.

In March of 2008 Universidad Santo Tomas in Chile will send the first Chilean priest to teach Spanish at the Saint Thomas Education College at Anhui.

“I am happy to see educational opportunities for our students and faculty in ICUSTA grow and expand into other areas,” said Dr. Joseph McFadden, UST president emeritus and ICUSTA executive director. “Students in China are very interested in learning Spanish and English for their future careers. The new centers will provide them an opportunity to learn these skills.”

The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Gerardo Rocha, UST corporation president Santiago, Chile, as well as, the Hon. Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, the former president of the Republic and current President of the Chilean Senate; and the mayor of Santiago, Chile, Raul Alcaino.

The Philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas was first introduced into China in the late 16th Century and the early 17th Century by western missionaries. The complete works of St. Thomas Aquinas will be translated by the end of 2007 and the first Thomist Congress will take place in the People’s Republic of China in 2009.

Dr. Mc Fadden also indicated that the newest ICUSTA member school will soon be opening in Africa in the spring of 2008 at the Ethiopian Catholic University of St. Thomas Aquinas (ECUSTA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
