Houston CPA Society Honors UST Students, Professor
6/6/2008
The Houston CPA Society honored five University of St. Thomas students and Ramon Fernadez, assistant professor of accounting, at the organization’s 2007-2008 Recognition Awards Ceremony. The event was held on May 15 at the Grande Ballroom of the Houstonian Hotel.
During the ceremony, four UST accounting students – Johnny Huynh, Christopher Kutac, Audrey Orda and Roma Singh – were awarded a $3,500 scholarship. The scholarships were underwritten by Stan and Margaret Voelkel. Jose Olmedo, a 2008 UST graduate, received the Texas Society of CPAs Accounting Excellence Award as the outstanding UST accounting graduate. Olmedo received a plaque and a $500 award. Fernandez received the Houston CPA Society Outstanding Contribution to Education Award.
“Professor Fernandez received this award for his ongoing challenge of students in the classroom, his encouragement to students to become Certified Public Accountants and his contribution to our Student Auxiliary in providing the students with an overview of the Becker CPA Review,” said Nancy Rutledge, executive director of the Houston CPA Society.
Fernandez said the students are deserving of the honor. He also expressed his gratitude toward the Society for their generosity and recognition of the UST accounting program.
“It’s great to see these outstanding accounting students being recognized by the Houston CPA Society,” Fernandez said. “Their excellent grades and involvement in the Accounting Society and other activities has been noted. Not only is the recognition important, but the generous scholarships will help them further their education to become the next generation of quality accountants. We in the Cameron School of Business and the Department of Accounting are truly proud of them.”
