UST Biology Senior to Research Anthrax, Other Projects
6/10/2008
Photo: Margaret VoThough the mere mention of anthrax struck fear in the hearts of Americans some seven years ago, this summer University of St. Thomas biology major Margaret Vo is eager to assist graduate students at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston with research on Bacillus Anthracis, a bacterium that causes anthrax, among other projects.

“I feel very fortunate to have been given this opportunity to experience such a unique environment,” said Vo. “This program will definitely challenge me and motivate me to continue my goal of becoming a medical student.”

Vo found the summer program through her own research into viable internship options throughout the summer.

Vo is a bioinformatics major at UST. Bioinformatics is a fast growing, and newly emerging, field in the life sciences which combines advanced skills from biology, computer science and mathematics to allow graduates to analyze data generated by genome and proteome research. UST was among the first universities nationwide to offer bioinformatics as a major at the undergraduate level.

“I chose bioinformatics because it is a fairly new field that incorporates biology and math and it was different. I just had to see what it was about,” Vo said.

Vo is the second of three children born to State Representative Hubert Vo (D) and wife Kathy, who she recognizes as her inspiration. “My mom and dad are immigrants who started with nothing and have been very successful. My older brother who graduated from UST is currently in medical school. I can only hope to be as successful as they have been,” Vo said.
