Linh Tran Receives "Duty, Honor" ROTC Scholarship
9/29/2008
UST sophomore Linh P. Tran never hits the snooze button. While her fellow Guinan Hall residents are cozy in their beds, Tran must wake up before dawn to complete physical training at 6 a.m. at the University of Houston. Tran pulls double duty as a chemistry major and a Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadet.
This duty, she says, is an honor. In addition to the $57,450 Air Force ROTC scholarship she received as a freshman, Tran was recently awarded the “Duty, Honor” scholarship, which covers room and board for four years.
Tran was the first student at the University of St. Thomas to enroll in Air Force ROTC when the program was introduced to St. Thomas in 2007. Air Force ROTC was introduced to Houston only in 2003 but is expanding quickly throughout the metro area. While based at the University of Houston, Air Force ROTC is also available to students at Rice, TSU, the University of St. Thomas, HCC, UH Downtown, and Embry Riddle.
ROTC is a comprehensive, four-year college program in which cadets take eight academic courses in leadership, management, teamwork, military studies, ethics, and much more. In addition, they participate in rigorous physical fitness training three times a week, a leadership lab weekly, and a variety of summer programs. ROTC is in addition to their normal academic major, and when they graduate cadets are commissioned second lieutenants in the air force.
Tran plans to become a medical doctor, and she said Air Force ROTC has helped her learn the discipline and leadership skills she will need in her career and throughout her life. The program, she said, mirrors the University’s motto of educating leaders of faith and character.
“Air Force ROTC greatly contributes to developing leaders of character. The program has helped me build my own self-confidence,” Tran said. “I’ve learned about different styles of leadership and what kind of leader I want to become. I would really like to express my gratitude to (UST President) Dr. Robert Ivany. He has been really supportive of the program, and I am very thankful for the additional scholarship.”
