Principled Leadership and Entrepreneurism: New Special Topics Course
10/9/2008
photo: stock market graphicHow did we get into the current global financial tailspin? It was not a lack of financial expertise, but a failure of principled leadership. A new, interdisciplinary course, entitled Democracy and Principled Entrepreneurism in a World of Change, developed with the financial assistance of The Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, explores the importance of principled leadership and entrepreneurship.

“The course is timely,” Dean of Arts and Sciences and Program director Dr. Dominic Aquila said, “and it proceeds naturally from UST’s belief that a well-integrated, liberal-arts education provides students the best preparation and the inner moral and intellectual resources to succeed and thrive in an increasingly dynamic environment.”

This course explores:

• the fundamental interrelations between human liberty and rights, the rule of law, and human flourishing and authentic development;
• the significance of intermediary institutions (family, churches, schools, universities, professional associations, etc.) for effective democracy and free enterprise; and
• the best practices for establishing prosperity-enabling institutions, especially in an environment of transition.

The Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation was established in 1980 by Charles G. Koch. The Koch Foundation supports programs of study and research that explore and advance the universality of core, classical principles of markets, institutions and rules.

This special topics course will be offered to upperclassman in economics, political science, international studies and business in the Spring and Fall 2009 semesters. As part of the grant, the curriculum for this interdisciplinary course will be developed by faculty members from social sciences, humanities and business: Dr. Daryl Koehn, Center for Business Ethics; Drs. Nivien Saleh and Hans Stockton, Center for International Studies; and Sister Damien Marie Savino, FSE, chair of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Studies.
