UST Dedicates Young Hall, Remembers Father Young
11/18/2008 University of St. Thomas faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends gathered on Thursday, Nov. 13 to dedicate the Young Hall in memory of the Rev. William J. Young, CSB.
Young Hall, located at 4200 Mt. Vernon St., provides apartments for upper class students and non-traditional students who want to continue to benefit from a residence life community.
The late Fr. Young served as University of St. Thomas president from 1966 to 1967, vice president for Academic Affairs from 1978 to 1979 and president again from 1979 – 1985. He also served as a professor of French, developed the Social Justice Institute which is named in his honor and served on the board of directors until his passing in 2006.
“The Fr. Young Residence Hall will remind us of his dedicated and selfless service to the University of St Thomas as president on two occasions and beloved professor of French literature,” said UST President Robert Ivany. “No one has contributed more to our University than Fr.William J. Young, CSB.”
Patricia LeBlanc, campus information assistant/switchboard operator, served as Fr. Young’s administrative assistant.
“As I look back on those years working with Father Young, now, I know that I won the spiritual lottery,” LeBlanc said. “I can remember typing Fr Young’s homilies with tears because I felt so blessed by God to help him accomplish his work as President of UST, but more so, as to be his helper in his office, as a priest in the Catholic Church and Basilian Order.”
During the dedication, Fr. Ted Baenziger, CSB, addressed the crowd and shared some of the his memories of working with Fr. Young for 24 years. Among the guests were members of the parish of Saint Basile, the French-speaking parish initiated on campus by Fr. Young and Fr Baenziger. For the last 25 years, the University of St. Thomas has served French families in the Houston area by celebrating Mass in French. Today, the parish has about 100 families and offers Catechism to about 75 children.
