Best-Selling Author John Bradshaw Speaks at UST
10/26/2009
Best-selling author and motivational speaker John Bradshaw will come to the University of St. Thomas to discuss his new book, Reclaiming Virtue: How We Can Develop the Moral Intelligence to Do the Right Thing at the Right Time for the Right Reason, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19 at Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum.

The lecture is part of the HoustonPBS Elevate Lecture series, and co-sponsored by the UST Center for Business Ethics.

Bradshaw’s book is an inspiring appeal to what Abraham Lincoln called “the better angels of our nature.” He claims each person has a born moral intelligence, an inner guidance system that can lead people in the right direction, but people may not know how to cultivate it. Bradshaw will also speak on why moral education tends to fail and the role of emotions in living a virtuous life.

For the past four decades, Bradshaw has combined his exceptional skills as the role of counselor, author, management consultant, theologian, philosopher, and public speaker, becoming one of the leading figures in the fields of addiction/recovery, family systems, relationships, spiritual and emotional growth, and management training. He was elected by a group of his peers as ‘one of the most influential writers on emotional health in the 20th Century.’

Bradshaw is the author of five books, three of which are New York Times Best Sellers. His books have sold more than 12½ million copies and are published in 42 different languages. His books are Homecoming: Reclaiming and Championing Your Inner Child, Healing the Shame That Binds, Creating Love and Bradshaw On: The Family—A Revolutionary Way of Self-Discovery, and Family Secrets—What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You.

The Houston native studied for the Roman Catholic priesthood at a Basilian seminary in Toronto where he remained for nine and one-half years, leaving just a few days prior to being ordained. During that time he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master degrees in psychology, philosophy, and theology from St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He continued his post graduate studies at Rice University and earned a Masters of Spiritual Psychology at University of Santa Monica. He also attended the University of St. Thomas, but left in 1956 without earning a degree.

The HoustonPBS Elevate Lecture series is presented by the John P. McGovern Foundation. The series promotes enlightening and thought-provoking conversation and provides practical everyday applications.

The Center for Business Ethics (CBES) at University of St. Thomas works with the corporate community to help business people and students make good choices that will benefit themselves, their businesses, and their community. The Center offers corporate governance training programs, conferences on business ethics, public lectures, an ethics essay contest for UST MBA students, and the Online Journal of Ethics.
