Drs. Srinivas, Stockton Attend Global Education Conference in Taiwan
11/6/2009
UST’s continued participation in international conferences is an important part of the University’s internationalization efforts. On October 16, 2009, Drs. Ravi Srinivas and Hans Stockton represented the University at the U3 Forum, hosted by the Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The U3 Forum themes were global education and international partnerships.
The U3 Forum 2011 is scheduled to be held on the UST campus in Houston. The Forum was established in 2005 by presidents of Providence College (Taiwan) and the University of St. Thomas (Chile). This forum would later become associated with the ICUSTA network of Catholic universities, whose secretariat resides at the University of St. Thomas in Houston under the long-time leadership of president emeritus Dr. Joseph McFadden. UST was invited to join the forum in 2008.
“UST’s participation in the U3 Forum benefits the University by establishing more personal and subsequently stronger relations with some of Taiwan’s top universities as well as our long-time sister school in Chile,” Srinivas said.
Srinivas, dean of extended programs, presented the UST’s welcome and remarks about the value of internationalization of education to Catholic universities. Building on the vision of Senator Fulbright’s vision of international education, he encouraged the attendees to reflect on the words of Pope John Paul II regarding the contribution of Catholic universities to address contemporary global challenges.
Dr. Stockton, associate professor in the Center for International Studies and director of UST’s Study Abroad Program, presented a paper summarizing the curricular, logistical, and financial benefits of international partnerships and collaboration for group studies abroad.
“Student and faculty exchange agreements and other programmatic possibilities are likely outcomes from this very fruitful journey,” Stockton said.
Prior to the U3 Forum, Srinivas and Stockton visited Soochow University (Taipei), National Cheng Chi University (Taipei), Ling Tung University (Taichung), and National Sun Yat-Sen University (Kaohsiung) where Dr. Stockton presented guest lectures on Taiwan’s political development in relation to South Korea and Japan. Srinivas and Stockton also met with various presidents, vice-presidents, deans, and faculty. Topics of discussion ranged from formal and informal modes of student, curricular, and faculty collaborations to the many similarities between southern Taiwan and the state of Texas. National Cheng Chi University, widely held to be one of the top two public universities in Taiwan, has been UST’s sister university for two years with an active student exchange growing quickly.
