UST Mock Trial Team Places Fifth at Tournament

 Hosting the Houston Regional Mock Trial Tournament for the first time, the UST Fighting Celts Mock Trial team came in fifth place the weekend of Feb. 21-22. The team was also invited to attend the Opening Round Championship Series in Memphis on March 27-29.
The UST advocates are: Kate Dickinson, Emily Cook, Rafael Casas, Elizabeth Alexander, Joe Konkel, Anthony Vargas (lawyer), Jeff Yurcak (witness), Judith Conover (witness), Monica Winch (witness), Merrari Zambrano (witness). The team was coached by Kelly Heallen and Jason Cox.
Out of about 180 students, Kate Dickenson won best lawyer with a perfect score of 20 out of 20. Jeff Yurcak won a best witness award having come in second out of 12.
St. Thomas was bested by the first place winner, Air Force Academy "A" team; second place winners, UT - Austin "A" team; third place winners, UT - Austin "B" team and fourth place winners, Collin County Community College "A" team.
Judges and lawyers from Harris and Ft. Bend Counties served as mock trial judges. Numerous UST student volunteers assisted Adjunct Professor Jeremy Heallen and Lisa Linney with tournament management and organization including Dustin Martin, Travis Wooten, Erika Moshay, Jerry Guajardo, Brani English, Angel Forward, Katherine Witty, Trisha Sims, Korlina Pior, Oliver Bludworth, Chris Dupree, Mary Green [coordinator], Vanessa Sarne, Allison Thomas.
