School of Education Professors to Present at Oxford Round Table
3/5/2009
Drs. Rita Coombs Richardson and Grace England, lecturers in the University of St. Thomas’ School of Education, will present Richardson’s first book in a series, Connecting with Others: Lessons for Teaching Social and Emotional Competence: Kindergarten through Second Grade at an early childhood conference of the Oxford Round Table in Oxford, England. This book is intended to guide young children to be sensitive to differences, to resolve conflicts peacefully, and learn tolerance and acceptance of others.
The four volume series, Connecting with Others: Lessons for Teaching Social and Emotional Competence, is a character education curriculum for students ranging from kindergarten to high school.
The curriculum includes 30 lessons divided into six skill areas: Concept of Self and Others; Socialization, Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution; Communication; Sharing; Empathy and Caring. Instructional strategies involve children in social decision-making and problem-solving.
“The teacher directly teaches and demonstrates the concepts while looking for opportunities to model behavior and reinforce pro-social skills as they occur,” said Coombs Richardson. “Newsletters are available at the back of the book to encourage family participation and transfer of skills taught in the classroom to the home. The teacher sends home a newsletter describing the target social skills and suggests an activity the parents can implement at home.”
The book is published by Research Press Publishers. Coombs Richardson’s books are used in classrooms both nationally and internationally. A research study by Coombs Richardson on the Connecting with Others series was accepted for publication in the Journal of Children and Schools.
