Newman Circle Celebrates 100 Years

To commemorate their 100th anniversary, nearly 40 members of the Newman Circle marked the milestone with a Mass at the Chapel of St. Basil on the University of St. Thomas campus and a luncheon at the River Oaks Country Club on March 3. His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo was the celebrant, and the Rev. Robert Barringer, CSB, who serves as the Circle’s Spiritual Director, was the concelebrant.
The Newman Circle, currently under the leadership of President Mary Lee Benedict, is the oldest philanthropic Catholic women’s organization in the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston. Founded in 1909, the Circle is focused the spiritual education of members and numerous charitable community outreach projects. The organization has had ties with the University of St. Thomas since the school was founded in 1947 including raising money to build the University’s library and providing scholarship funds to women since the 1930s. One of the UST Basilian Fathers has served as the Circle’s Spiritual Director for more than 50 years. At the luncheon, the membership presented a check of $15,000 to the UST President Dr. Robert Ivany for the Newman Circle Scholarship. 
Luncheon and Mass guests included Newman Circle members Mary Lee Benedict, Pat McCroby, Kitty Charlton, Leanna Reidy, Pat Cook, Bridget Long, Shirley O’Brien, Anne Quirk, Joan O’Malley, Margaret Granberry and Norma Clark, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Fr. Robert Barringer and Dr. Robert Ivany.
