UST Hosts 21st Annual Piano Camp for Area Children
5/28/2009
photo: piano campFor the 21st year, the University of St. Thomas invites young piano students to the campus for five mornings of musical activities including individual and group instruction, "hands-on" experience with the piano, harpsichord, clavichord and other keyboard instruments. The camp offers experienced piano instruction for a great price to students of all skill levels in grades three through 12.

The camp will be held Monday-Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon, June 22 to 26 in UST’s Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon. Priced at $125, with a $25 deposit required, the camp is a value compared to other summer piano camps held at Houston universities, camp founder and director, Paul Krystofiak said.

“This is a great time for piano students and ‘home schoolers’ to meet other music students in the summer. Practicing can be an isolating chore and getting together in a group is so refreshing and inspiring in the summer. The group activities are fun and encourage creativity and sharing new ideas, wonderful way to meet new musical friends,” Krystofiak said. “I have students coming up to me from many years past whom comment to me on what a 'life changing' experience' it was to attend piano camp. Something magical happens when music is shared. It is really a wonderful outlet for kids and coming together to share their music is an invaluable experience. Music is truly an international language and can be very spiritually enriching.”

Krystofiak has served on the faculty of the University of St. Thomas since 1986 and holds degrees in piano performance and piano pedagogy on the graduate level. He also brings to the camp expertise from his studies abroad. Krystofiak has served seven terms as president of the Houston Music Teachers Association and was honored by HMTA, receiving its Service Award and “Teacher of the Year” in 1993. He was also recognized as “Faculty Advisor of the Year” for his guidance with the UST chapter of the music fraternity Gamma Tau.

Enrollment is limited to space and time considerations. To register for the camp, or for more information, call 713-525-3566 or 713-494-3129.
