UST Remembers Registrar Emeritus Deacon Richard Glor
7/14/2009
Deacon Richard J.L. Glor, who served the University of St. Thomas for 18 years as registrar and international student advisor, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2009 at the age of 76. In recent years, Glor courageously battled Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after the New York Yankee baseball star who died of the ailment.

“He will be deeply missed by his colleagues and by the many, many people whose lives he touched even in his illness,” said UST President Robert Ivany.

A viewing is scheduled from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, July 23 in the Chapel of St. Basil followed immediately by a Funeral Mass. Burial will be at the Acacia Cemetery in North Tonawanda, New York.

Since Glor first came to St. Thomas in 1986, he exhibited extraordinary dedication and concern for the individual student. Glor first served the University in Institutional Advancement. Taking a break from his work for a brief period, Glor returned in 1990 as assistant registrar, then academic programs auditor. Eventually becoming registrar, he later simultaneously served as international student advisor.

Glor, one of eight children, was born in 1933 in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from NYU in 1953 with a degree in food service and hotel management and owned a travel agency for many years. He also served in the Korean War. In 1973 Glor earned a theology degree from University of St. Thomas and was ordained a deacon. It was this pastoral concern for service to students that he brought to UST.

Slowed by the onset of Lou Gehrig’s disease, Glor continued to lend support in any way he could. In 2000, the University bestowed the honorary title of registrar emeritus on Glor, who continued to serve as international student advisor and as chair of the graduation committee until his retirement.

The Richard J. L. Glor Endowment for International Students was established by an anonymous donor to honor Glor’s devoted service to the University as international student advisory and registrar.

“Through this endowed fund, Richard assisted international students with emergency aid,” said UST’s director of Planned Giving Diane Thornton. “He had great love and compassion for the needs of these students. He understood the circumstances unique to international students. To that end, he left his life estate – his home – to the University. This is a gift of great generosity to our current and future international students.”

Memorial donations may be made to The Richard J.L. Glor Endowment for International Students in his honor. Please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement for details. There will be no opportunity to display floral tributes.
