UST Receives Workplace Flexibility Award
8/28/2009
The University of St. Thomas was honored with the 2009 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility. This prestigious, national award recognizes employers in Houston and across the country who successfully use workplace flexibility as a strategy to increase effectiveness and yield positive business results.
“The University of St. Thomas is pleased to receive The Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility,” said University of St.Thomas President Dr. Robert Ivany. “We are grateful for the dedication and professionalism of our faculty and staff. We strive to provide our University community the latitude to perform their responsibilities efficiently and effectively while recognizing the importance of the students whom we serve. Receiving this award is testament that we are succeeding in our efforts to offer our community the tools to achieve a life/work balance.”
Applicants for the award were evaluated in a rigorous two-step process: first comparing the employer's application to nationally representative data from the Families and Work Institute's National Study of Employers, and then corroborating the employer responses through an employee survey. As a winner, the University of St. Thomas ranked in the top 20 percent of employers nationally in terms of flexible work programs, policies and culture and will be featured in next year's edition of the Guide to Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work, published by the Families and Work Institute.
The awards will be presented locally by City of Houston’s Flexible Workplace Initiative Program at an event on Sept. 17 at the Wortham Theater Center. The awards recognize organizations that are striving to find new ways to make work “work” in today’s difficult economy. Director of Human Resources John Meuser will accept the award on behalf of the University.
Local winners are Access Sciences Corporation, BDO Seidman, LLP, CenterPoint Energy, Chevron Corporation, Deloitte LLP, El Paso Corporation, Ernst & Young, Fulbright & Jaworski LLP, Gimmal Group, HBL Architects, Houston Department of Health and Human Services, Jaemar International Inc., Klotz Associates, Inc., KPMG LLP, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, PKF Texas, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ryan, Inc., Tegron, The Dow Chemical, The VIA Group, University of Phoenix, University of St. Thomas, and Vinson & Elkins LLP.
The Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility is part of the When Work Works project, an ongoing initiative of the Families and Work Institute, the Institute for a Competitive Workforce (an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce), and the Twiga Foundation. Through When Work Works, these partner organizations provide research, resources, and recognition to employers nationwide. The project shares the results of research on creating effective and flexible workplaces that meet the needs of the 21st century.
