UST Remembers Father Dennis Andrews, CSB

Rev. Dennis Andrews, CSB, former Basilian Superior, member of the University of St. Thomas Board of Directors and Associate Dean of the School of Education died Tuesday, April 14. A Memorial Mass is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 26 in the Chapel of St. Basil.

Fr. Andrews began his educational journey at UST, graduating in 1965 with a double major in education and English. He retired from UST in 2007 after a 42-year career in education, and 14 ½ years of service at UST. He received his PhD from the University of New Mexico in 1995. He earned a Master of Divinity from the University of Saint Michael’s College and a Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Detroit.

At UST, Fr. Andrews served as Associate Dean of the School of Education, Director of the Master in Education Program, Director of the Private School MEd program. He taught courses in educational research and evaluation, learning theories/teaching strategies, legal issues in private school education and private school administration.

“Fr. Andrews was the most caring, kind and gentle person,” said Dr. Ruth Strudler, former dean of the School of Education. “He was the moral compass of the School of Education, and he kept us balanced. He cared deeply for his students, and was respectful of each human being. He set very high standards in his classroom, and he lived up to those standards. I am very grateful for the opportunity to have worked with him and I will miss him.”

He was an active member of the UST Board of Directors, holding the positions on numerous committees. Fr. Andrews served as the local Basilian Superior and the spiritual director to the Newman Circle. He was appointed to the O’Connor House in Windsor, Ontario, effective Jan. 1, 2008.

Prior to joining the UST faculty, Fr. Andrews shared his expertise as an educator at schools across the country including Catholic Central High school in Redford, Mich.; Saint Pius X High School in Albuquerque, N.M. and Aquinas Institute in Rochester, N.Y. He established a guidance program for grades nine through 13 at Michael Power High School in Toronto. He taught American literature and theology at St. Thomas High School in Houston.
