UST Vocal Students Place in GHNATS Competition
4/20/2010
University of St. Thomas Music Program students achieved success at the Greater Houston Chapter the National Association of Teachers Singing (GHNATS) competition, which took place at the University of Houston on April 10. GHNATS is an event where singers compete and are scored by other vocal instructors and faculty around the greater Galveston-Houston area.
Ariel Deshotel won first place for Sophomore Women singing “The Black Swan.” Teresa Wells placed second for Freshman Women; Bobby Murillo was a semi-finalist for Freshman Men. Ariel Malicse won second place for Intermediate Adults.
Marion Russell Dickson, adjunct professor of voice at the University of St. Thomas and former president of GHNATS, encourages UST students to compete.
“When students go to competition, it gives them a chance to prepare their work in a very thorough and professional manner,” said Dickson. “Students get feedback from other professors of voice, and are also able to observe their peers and see what is happening at a greater level within their art.”
