UST Celebrates A Year of Leadership

The eighth annual Leadership Banquet, “Celebrating the Stars of UST,” was held Sunday, April 25 in Jerabeck Center to celebrate a year of student leadership and achievement. This year’s Presidential award went to Shawna Booth. Vania Phuoc received the Marsha A. Wooldridge Citizenship Award; Ashley Worhol received the Emerging Leader Award.

“The leadership banquet recognized many student groups and student leaders we have on campus,” said Angie Montelongo, assistant director of Student Activities.

Approximately 160 people attended the event including faculty, staff and families and friends of honorees. Recipients were nominated by their peers, faculty and staff and were reviewed by a special selection committee. Also recognized at the ceremony were the presidents of UST academic clubs, student organizations, sports clubs and residence life staff.

Presidential Leadership Award: Shawna Boothe
This prestigious award is given to an undergraduate junior or senior who has made significant leadership contributions to the University during his or her years as a student.

Emerging Leader Award: Ashley Worhol
This award is given to an individual, who through education and insight, has developed a strong base to become a vibrant student leader at UST. A current freshman or sophomore, this individual is most likely to take on leadership roles that will allow him or her to voice his or her concerns and change the face of the University.

Marsha A. Wooldridge Citizenship Award: Vania Phuoc
This award is given to a student who has distinguished him or herself in character, leadership and scholarship. He or she has demonstrated a strong commitment UST through positive contributions to the entire community. This individual is successful in his or her academic area of study and co-curricular efforts, is sensitive to the value of diversity within the UST community, and is self-confident, skillful, creative and compassionate.

Dr. Janice Gordon-Kelter Outstanding Woman of the Year Award: Nicole Keith
This award is named after the late Dean of the Master in Liberal Arts Program, Dr. Janice Gordon-Kelter, in recognition of her tireless efforts for improving the experience of women at UST. This award is given to an undergraduate or graduate female student whose leadership has had a positive impact on the overall experience of women on campus. Special thanks to Dr. Irving Kelter in the development of this award.

Outstanding Non-Traditional Student of the Year Award: Derek Pershing
This award is given to a non-traditional student for their dedication to improving the experience of UST non-traditional students. A non-traditional student must meet 2 of the following criteria: attend part time for at least part of the academic year; work full time while enrolled; is financially independent; is a parent; or is 25 years or older.

Outstanding Club/Organization of the Year:
Heath Occupations Students of America (HOSA)

Advisor of the Year Award:
Professor Ramiro Juarez

Student Enrichment Award:
Tri-Beta’s Super Science Saturday

Community Service Award:
ACS for Hospitality Apartments Outreach

Creativity Award:
Miss UST Scholarship Pageant

Co-Programming Award:
5th Annual Salsa Contest
