ExxonMobil CEO Speaks to International Studies Students
6/2/2010
University of St. Thomas international studies students learned about the future of energy and the role of corporate citizenship from renowned expert Rex W. Tillerson, CEO of the Exxon Mobil Corporation.
Tillerson was the speaker and honoree at World Affairs Council Luncheon, held at noon on Monday, April 19, at the Hilton Americas Hotel. The World Affairs Council aims to educate citizens and advance Houston as an international center.
Tillerson’s expertise comes from 25 years of experience at Exxon, the world’s largest publicly traded oil and natural gas company. He started at the company in 1975 as a production engineer, but now leads a global workforce of about 80,000 employees with 14,000 in Houston alone.
“The world is becoming a smaller and smaller place and the line between corporations and government is thinning,” said international studies senior Danny Sehbalco. “The international sphere is changing; I to learn to how to apply my studies to better understand and survive in this constantly changing world.”
By attending World Affairs Council events, International Studies students have the opportunity to get exposure to prominent international figures and key players in global business.
“International studies students learn about how many other countries to develop national resources,” said international studies senior Dehua Lea. “Tillerson advised that the goal should be to buy energy from other countries- to diversify- rather than focus on one country to achieve energy independence.”
