Dr. Charles Stewart Explores History of the Art Book

The University of St. Thomas Friends of the Doherty Library will  host, “From Illumination to I-Pads: A very brief History of the Art Book,” a lecture by Dr. Charles Stewart, assistant professor of Art History. The lecture will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Doherty Library Main Lobby.
The rise of religious academic learning led to innovations in illuminated manuscript technology and production. The spread of Judaism and Christianity throughout the ancient Mediterranean prompted the replacement of the scroll by the codex. With the introduction of monastic scriptoriums in Ireland, the seeds of European universities were planted. Academies bloomed in the age of scholasticism when picture books reached their aesthetic apex.
Today the academy once more finds itself in a period of transition — the computers that universities have developed and embraced are now replacing the codex. This lecture will trace the history of the illustrated book, highlighting the key stages during the Middle Ages, while touching on where we stand in the twenty-first century.
