Fr. Buentello Smokes Turkeys to Raise World Youth Day Funds
10/8/2010
The University of St. Thomas World Youth Day (WYD) pilgrims are working hard to raise money for their trek across Spain next summer.
On Wednesday, Nov. 24 , UST Chaplain Fr. Michael Buentello, CSB, will use his famous “Holy Smoker” to barbeque and sell Thanksgiving Day whole turkies to offset their travel costs. The cost is $20 for approximately 7-8 pounds of smoked turkey. The meat will be available for pickup on the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 24.
Prior to attending WYD in Madrid, Fr. Buentello and his students will be hiking 215 miles of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela as spiritual preparation before meeting the Vicar of Christ. The Camino, known in English as the Way of St. James, is a pilgrimage route ending in northwest Spain at Santiago de Compostela. For more than one thousand years, pilgrims have been walking this path. The UST group will spend nearly a month in Spain beginning with a two week long backpacking trip on the Camino, and culminating at WYD with the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI.
The estimated cost for attendance is $3,500 per person, and they plan to take 12 students. The students have already begun practice hikes and campouts in preparation. Their goal is to raise $1,000.
Orders for the Thanksgiving turkeys will be taken in early November. All those wishing to place a turkey order or otherwise support the UST pilgrimage group, should contact Fr. Buentello at buentem@stthom.edu.
