Men’s Soccer Hits 3-Game Winning Streak
10/12/2010
UST was back on the road this past week with two trips to the Dallas area to face off against Red River Conference opponent Northwood University on Tuesday, Oct. 5, and then to face NCAA Division 3 opponent the University of Dallas on Friday, Oct. 8.

Coming off the win at home versus UH-Victoria on Oct. 3, the Celts looked to continue winning ways when they faced off against Northwood University in Cedar Hill, TX. It was obvious from the opening whistle that the Celts would accept nothing less than a win this day. UST controlled the possession, but found it difficult to get a goal. In the latter minutes of the first half Rafael Bustos linked up with a cross from Shane Rojas and headed the ball the past the Northwood goalkeeper. Although the Celts continued to fire away on the Northwood goal they went into halftime with just a 1-0 lead. The Celts came out strong again in the second half but it would take a penalty kick from Shane Rojas midway through the second half to push their lead to 2-0, which is where the scoreline would end. Shane Rojas was man of the match with 1 goal and 1 one assist and UST would win with a final score of 2-0.

UST was back on the road for another trip to the Dallas area to face off against the University of Dallas and try to extend their winning streak to three. Once again the Celts came out strong and looked to certain to continue the recent string of wins. Midway through the first half Nick Boras broke down the right sideline and whipped in a cross that found Rafael Bustos' head again for his third goal in as many matches. The Celts completely dominated play and went into the break with a 1-0 lead. The second half saw a re-energized Celts team play some of its best soccer of the season outshooting the Crusaders from Dallas 20 to 7. Jad El-Masri found the back of the net twice in the second half with assists from Luis Bustos and Shane Rojas. The final score ended with UST on top 3-0 and moving the Celts to 6-4-1 on the season.

Next up the Celts will host NAIA top 25 Bellevue University from Nebraska at 7 p.m. on Friday Oct. 15, and again at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16 versus Huston Tilloston University. Both games will be played at Strake Jesuit, 8900 Bellaire Boulevard.

"This weekend will really test us as a team and see just how much we have improved in recent weeks,” said Men’s Soccer Coach Aaron Champenoy. “Bellevue is a strong team that has with national tournament births the last two years and constantly rated in the top 25 polls, and Huston Tilloston is always a close match. I know we will be up for a battle on Friday night and I am looking forward to thr match. After all, Bellevue is my alma-mater and will be the first time I have faced off against the Bruins since I left as coach in 2007 to start the program here at UST."
