Houston Arts Alliance Awards Grant to Irish Studies Cultural Outreach
10/27/2010
The University of St. Thomas Center for Irish Studies Cultural Outreach Program was recently awarded a $2,500 grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance (HAA). HAA is a non-profit arts organization supporting and promoting artistic life in Houston that provides grants annually to hundreds of arts and cultural organizations through a competitive grant allocation process. Organizations are selected to receive grants based on their expertise, objectivity, and ability to reflect the diversity of the Houston community.
Since the Center for Irish Studies began in 2003, it has hosted monthly cultural outreach events featuring Irish history, literature, politics, art, music, culture and society. The Center has welcomed Irish storytellers, musicians, speakers and performing artists to share their expertise and talent with the community. The HAA grant will help offset the cost of these events.
In addition to sponsoring many cultural outreach events, the Center for Irish Studies offers undergraduate and graduate courses in history, literature, political and social science, law, theology, language, art history, and drama. The Center actively enhances the academic mission of the University by integrating an intellectual examination of Irish heritage and promoting peace and reconciliation using the Irish model. Through the Center, the University offers a minor and an MLA graduate concentration in Irish Studies, as well as a study abroad program to Ireland and Northern Ireland.
