Men’s Basketball Faces Xavier, Sam Houston

Graphic: BasketballAfter a 63-59 win against Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday, Nov. 27, the UST Men’s Basketball team was ready to face No. 20 ranked Xavier University on Nov. 29, and Division I Sam Houston State on Dec. 1.

The Gold Rush of Xavier University came into the game sporting a 8-0 record while Sam Houston State was 3-1 with its only loss to Texas. The Celts got off to a strong start against the Gold Rush going 5/9 from three-point range for a stellar 56 percent. Pressure defense by the Celts gave St. Thomas a 29-24 lead heading to the locker room for halftime.

The second half saw Xavier finding its range from distance going 4/5 and shooting 68 percent as a team. Xavier was led in scoring by Devin Andrew with 19 points. With Xavier’s hot shooting down the stretch, the Celts still had a chance to tie with under a minute to go. St. Thomas forced 21 turnovers from the Gold Rush, but were out rebounded 30-21. The Celts lost 63-60. The team was led in scoring by Jeremy Lewis’s 16 points and 6 assists.

On Tuesday, Dec. 1, the Celts faced Sam Houston State, defending Southland Conference Champions and NCAA Tournament Team. The Bearcats jumped out to an early 12-2 lead before the Celts stormed back with a 12-0 run of their own to take a 14-12 lead. First half shooting from long range by Anthony Medina kept the Celts close heading into the lock room at half time just down 6 points.

In the second half, the Bearcats pushed the lead out to 11 before Jeremy Lewis scored 8 points over three minutes to pull the Celts back within 5. In the end, the Bearcats defeated the Celts 54-46. The Celts held the Bearcats to a season low 30 percent from the field. They were led in scoring by Jeremy Lewis with 14. The Celts, 3-7, will play at Our Lady of the Lake at 7 p.m. Dec. 16.
