UST Conference Celebrates International Year of the Nurse
Celebrating the International Year of the Nurse, the University of Saint Thomas hosted a lecture and book signing with renowned nursing scholar Dr. Barbara Dossey on Dec. 8. Dossey is a distinguished Florence Nightingale scholar who has been effective in demonstrating the impact of Nightingale’s life and work on modern nursing and humankind.

The International Year of the Nurse is a collaborative, grassroots global initiative honoring nurses’ voices, values, and wisdom. 2010 was the Centennial Year of the death of modern nursing’s founder—Florence Nightingale (1820-1910). To celebrate this historic milestone, the 2010 International Year of the Nurse served as a public awareness initiative to actively involve the world’s nurses (estimated to be more than 15 million) in a celebration of commitment to bring health to their communities worldwide.

Internationally recognized as a pioneer in the holistic nursing movement, Dossey works to advance the practice and philosophies of holistic care, both within the health professions and in the lives of lay people. Dossey articulates how healing is promoted by attending to the delicate interaction of body, mind, and spirit, and how centuries-old concepts can be successfully applied in the care of patients and in everyday living.

Dossey’s latest book, Florence Nightingale: Mystic, Visionary, Healer, focuses on the philosophical and practical impact of Florence Nightingale's life and work on modern nursing and humankind. In addition to serving as the Director of Holistic Nursing Consultants in Santa Fe, N.M., Dossey is the co-director of the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health (NIGH). In this capacity, she has been a primary force in promoting the International Year of the Nurse (IYNurse). The NIGH honors the legacy of Florence Nightingale and other nurses, midwives, and healthcare workers of the past and present, who have shown how personal actions can make a world of difference.
